Joshua Mikhaiel

Documentary wedding photography centred on real moments

Joshua Mikhaiel is a wedding and elopement photographer whose work is guided by a simple idea: photographs matter because the moments in them mattered. His style is mostly photojournalistic, with an emphasis on human connection, raw beauty and the small, honest moments that give a wedding its character.

Rather than building the day around staged photo opportunities or copied poses, Joshua aims to document the celebration already unfolding. That means paying attention to the laughter, emotion, energy and occasional chaos, while giving couples room to experience their wedding instead of feeling as though they are performing for the camera.

A people-first approach to the wedding day

Joshua describes wedding photography as story listening as much as storytelling. He gets to know the people involved, participates in the celebration and works from inside the story so the finished photographs reflect the couple and the atmosphere around them.

He also recognises that a photographer shapes more than the final gallery. Because they spend much of the day beside the couple, the right personal fit can influence how relaxed and present everyone feels. Joshua's approach is designed to help people forget about the camera, loosen up and enjoy being together, including couples who do not consider themselves naturally photogenic.

Byron Bay weddings, elopements and films

Joshua photographs weddings, elopements and engagements, and his portfolio includes celebrations at Byron Bay and hinterland venues such as The Orchard Estate and Byron View Farm. Byron Bay weddings are included within his usual travel area, and he is also available for celebrations elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

Videography is available for couples who want photography and film. His films follow the same emotion-led approach as his stills, preserving the real interactions and feeling of the day in a polished, high-end home-movie style.

Booking and gallery delivery

Joshua accepts a limited number of commissions each year and places importance on hearing a couple's story and meeting before completing the formal booking process. Wedding photographs are generally delivered in a private, shareable online gallery around four to six weeks after the wedding, with elopement galleries often ready sooner. The gallery can also be used to order prints and other photo products.
